Building pathways for rural young people

24 June 2026

Helen Macpherson Smith Trust was delighted to meet recipients of the Future Rural Leaders Scholarship Fund at its 75th Anniversary celebration at Government House in June 2026, recognising their achievements and strong connection to regional communities.

Established with an initial investment of $750,000 in 2008, the scholarship fund is administered by Youthrive Victoria and supports young people from rural and regional communities to access higher education. Youthrive Victoria, formerly the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation, was founded on the belief that regional communities thrive through the strength, resilience and leadership of young people.

For many young people growing up in rural and regional Victoria, accessing university can present real challenges, including financial pressure, relocation, and distance from established support networks. The scholarships help address these barriers by easing the financial burden of study and providing practical support. The Youthrive model equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to their communities and chosen fields.

At the anniversary event, the Trust was joined by Youthrive CEO Andrew McGuckian, and scholarship recipients Lily Ann Bright, Ali Ehsani, Sarsha Layton and Katherine Wagner. Sarsha Layton recommenced her nursing studies in 2025 with continued support from Youthrive. Ali Ehsani is undertaking a Health Science degree at Monash University. Katherine Wagner is studying Law and Global Studies at Monash University while engaging in leadership and community initiatives, and Lily Ann Bright has commenced a Bachelor of Youth Work at Australian Catholic University.

It was a great opportunity for our most recent Future Rural Leaders Scholarship recipients to expand their horizons in such a wonderful setting. Increasing their understanding of Helen Macpherson Smith and her significant benevolence was inspiring and will strengthen their commitment to becoming future rural leaders.  Andrew McGuckian, Youthrive Victoria CEO

Across the program, scholars benefit from a holistic model that includes mentoring, leadership development and ongoing guidance. This support enables them to succeed academically while strengthening their confidence, expanding their networks and maintaining a strong connection to their communities.

“The Youthrive Scholarship is a tremendous award that supports students facing disadvantage. Through the generous donations made to this program, students like me are given the opportunity to progress our academic journeys”, scholarship recipient Ali Ehsani said. “I cannot adequately express how grateful and fortunate I am to pursue my studies without the financial burden that might otherwise prevent me from doing so.”

As the Trust reflects on 75 years of impact, the Future Rural Leaders Scholarship Fund highlights the benefit of investing in people and place, supporting the next generation who help shape strong and sustainable regional communities across Victoria.
